Your customers, the environment and your CFO will thank you
Submer offers an innovative way to cool your data center equipment, with benefits that go far beyond cooling.
Rising energy prices, increased environmental awareness and the need to reduce costs are driving the industry to explore new approaches. This has opened the door to innovative technologies. Since 2015, Submer has successfully introduced immersion cooling in the US and is now expanding across Europe together with Alcadon.
The concept is simple: cool your data center equipment by immersing it in SmartCoolant, a specially developed dielectric cooling fluid. In addition to reducing energy consumption, Submer can save space and help optimize equipment performance.
Most of us have been taught to keep liquids well away from servers and other IT equipment. So immersing your equipment in liquid may sound counterintuitive. However, numerous cases from leading global companies demonstrate that the technology works and offers significant benefits.
At Alcadon, we are ready to answer your questions.
Frequently asked questions about Submer and SmartCoolant technology
1. How does it work? keyboard_arrow_down
The basic principle behind Submer is to use liquid to cool servers and other IT equipment.
Instead of installing a 19" rack in a conventional rack cabinet, the 19" rack is positioned vertically and immersed in the specially developed SmartCoolant cooling fluid.
SmartCoolant is a dielectric fluid, which means it does not conduct electrical current.
2. Who is Submer? keyboard_arrow_down
Submer was founded in 2015 by Daniel Pope and Pol Valls.
Their ambition was to make the operation and construction of data centers more sustainable and efficient. That remains a key driving force behind the company today.
With operations in both the US and Europe, Submer's technology addresses data center requirements that are also highly relevant in Scandinavia.

3. What can be installed in a Submer unit? keyboard_arrow_down

The short answer is almost any electronic equipment used in your data center.
This includes:
- Servers from all manufacturers, including 19" and 21" OCP servers
- Solid-state storage devices and helium-filled spinning media from all manufacturers
- Network switches, routers and storage controllers
- Fabric infrastructure, including copper and single mode fiber
- Power supplies
- Battery backup systems
- Power distribution units (PDUs)
- Other equipment, subject to testing
4. Can the cooling fluid damage my server equipment? keyboard_arrow_down

No. In fact, immersion can help protect the equipment.
Provided that the equipment has been correctly prepared for installation in a Submer cooling system, including removing or disabling fans and replacing thermal paste with iridium tape where required, immersion offers several advantages:
- Equipment is protected against dust and dirt in a closed, fully controlled environment
- The absence of vibration helps reduce mechanical wear
- Operating costs, environmental impact and space requirements can be reduced
SmartCoolant is a dielectric fluid, which means electrical current cannot pass through it. Watch a hair dryer being immersed in SmartCoolant
5. Who is this type of cooling designed for? keyboard_arrow_down
Submer is relevant to virtually any organization operating server equipment.
Data centers and organizations working with cloud computing and edge computing can particularly benefit from Submer solutions.
6. What is the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of SmartCoolant? keyboard_arrow_down
SmartCoolant is certified as biodegradable and has a GWP of 0. In other words, it has no impact on global warming.
