How do I choose the right fiber cable?
When choosing the right fiber cable for a network project, there are several important factors to consider. It is not simply a matter of choosing a "fast connection". You need the right type of fiber for the installation, future requirements and the specific application.
Alcadon's team has many years of experience advising customers on fiber cables. Here, we have put together some general guidelines and rules of thumb to help you choose the right cable. No two projects are the same, so if you are unsure which solution is right for your installation please contact us.
Here are some of the key factors to consider:
1. Singlemode or multimode?
One of the first decisions is whether to use singlemode or multimode fiber cable. The main differences are core diameter, transmission distance and application.
- Singlemode (9µm) G652D is a well-established standard typically used for long distances, such as backbone networks in cities or connections between buildings. G652D offers low attenuation and strong performance over longer distances.
- Singlemode (9µm) G657A1 and G657A2 are more flexible variants designed for applications that require a smaller bend radius, such as FTTH (Fiber To The Home) installations or densely packed ducts. G657A2 provides even better bend performance than G657A1 and is well suited to installations with multiple bends and limited space.
- Multimode OM3 (50µm) and Multimode OM4 (50µm) are designed for short to medium distances, typically in data centers, equipment rooms and office buildings. OM4 offers better performance than OM3 and supports longer distances at higher speeds, including 40G and 100G Ethernet.
2. How do the installation type and environment affect your choice of fiber cable?
Is it a new installation, an upgrade or a replacement? Will the cable be blown through a duct or pulled through cable pathways? Both the cable construction and compatibility with the installation equipment need to be considered.
When using fiber blowing machines, for example, it is essential to choose a cable designed for blowing. The cable needs the appropriate friction characteristics, stiffness and dimensions for the duct being used. Choosing the wrong cable can result in damage or poor installation performance.
3. Choosing fiber cables with future requirements in mind
Networks can quickly become outdated if future requirements are not considered. Singlemode is generally better suited to future capacity requirements because of its higher bandwidth potential and lower attenuation. However, multimode particularly OM4, can also be the right solution in certain data center environments where transmission distances do not exceed 150 metres.
You should also consider whether to use pre-terminated solutions or splice and terminate the fiber in the field.
If you choose a pre-terminated solution, Alcadon's production team can prepare much of the solution in advance, leaving you to focus on the installation.
